A Safe & Healthy Community

Safe neighbourhoods are the foundation of a strong community. People should be able to enjoy their neighbourhoods, parks, trails, and public spaces with confidence. I will support strong, responsive police, fire, and paramedic services and ensure they have the support needed to meet the needs of our growing community.

Access to quality healthcare is essential to Brantford's future. As our community continues to grow, we must continue working with healthcare partners, the Brant Community Healthcare Foundation, regional partners, and government partners to secure the investments, new hospital, and healthcare services our community needs.

At the same time, we must continue expanding healthcare capacity and access to care so people can get the services they need close to home, both today and in the future.

Community safety is strongest when prevention, collaboration, and coordinated efforts work together. By strengthening community partnerships, supporting early intervention and prevention efforts, connecting people to the services they need, and working with provincial and federal governments to improve community safety and well-being, we can build a safer, healthier, and more connected Brantford.

Supporting Those Who Answer the Call

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics serve our community under increasingly complex and demanding conditions. Supporting them means providing the staffing, training, facilities and workplace supports they need, while listening directly to the people doing the work.

My background in public health, my work on Council and my experience in police governance have given me a direct understanding of our emergency services and the pressures they face. I have supported additional frontline staffing, stronger downtown police coverage, adoption of the Fire Master Plan, and investments that help first responders do their jobs safely and effectively.

As mayor, I will:

Establish a Mayor’s First Responders Advisory Table, bringing frontline police, fire and paramedic personnel, their associations and service leadership into direct conversation with the Mayor’s Office.

Continue supporting implementation of the Fire Master Plan, including the additional staffing, training, equipment and facility improvements required to serve a growing city.

Work to advance a modern emergency-services training facility by pursuing provincial funding, regional partnerships and a responsible plan for construction and ongoing operation.

Call for a thorough review of any proposed paramedic station closure, including the Henry Street location, based on call volumes, response times, population growth and the needs of the areas it serves.

Advocate for paramedic staffing and resources that reflect increasing call volumes and the growing complexity of emergency calls.

Seek to continue serving on the Police Services Board and remain connected to the officers, staff and community partners who understand the challenges facing our police service. I will listen to their perspectives and work with them to support effective, accountable and responsive public safety.

Respect the collective bargaining process while supporting fair compensation, safe working conditions and workplace supports that recognize the skill, responsibility and risks involved in emergency service.

Support mental-health, occupational-stress and injury-prevention supports for first responders and their families.

As mayor, I will make these needs a priority and work with Council, neighbouring municipalities and other levels of government to strengthen our case and secure the support Brantford requires.

I have seen how hard our first responders work and the pressures they carry. They answer when our community calls for help.

As mayor, I will make sure we also hear them when they call for the staffing, training, resources and workplace supports they need to serve our community safely.
